FREE LEGAL AID CLINIC

The Haryana State Legal Services Authority (HSLSA) has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker section of the society and to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.

According to Section 2 (c )  The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (39 of 1987);

 “legal aid clinic” means the facility established by the District Legal Services Authority to provide basic legal services to the villagers with the assistance of Para-Legal Volunteers or Lawyers, on the lines of a primary health center providing basic health services to the people in the locality and includes the legal aid clinic run by the law colleges and law universities.

In the discharge of its functions under Legal Services Authority Act, the District Authority shall, wherever appropriate act in coordination with other governmental and nongovernmental institutions, universities and others engaged in the work of promoting the cause of legal services to the poor and shall also be guided by such directions as the Central Authority or the State Authority may give to it in writing.

Legal Aid has a close relationship with the welfare state, and the provision of legal aid by a state is influenced by attitudes towards welfare. Legal aid is a welfare provision by the state for the people who could otherwise not afford counsel from the legal system. Legal aid also helps to ensure that welfare provisions are enforced by providing people entitled to welfare provisions, such as social housing, with access to legal advice and the courts.

In consonance with the Provisions Department of laws BPSMV Khanpur Kalan Sonipat has constituted a Legal Aid Clinic committee with the collaboration of Haryana State Legal Service Authority/District Legal Service Authority, Sonipat. The cell is providing free legal aid on every working Friday and Saturday of the week.

Legal Aid Clinics basically serve the purpose of providing legal advice not for the aim of earning profit but in General Public Interest. In law school, though knowledge of law is thoroughly imparted. However theoretical knowledge is not sufficient when its applicability is not known. Students pursuing law have zeal and enthusiasm to provide legal services. Legal aid clinics thus serve the two-fold purpose, the first that they provide free legal services to economically weaker people and second, they direct the energies of the students of law in contributing to the society.

These students are headed by their teachers. The members of the Legal Aid clinic are engaged in spreading legal awareness in rural areas through street plays as well as legal aid camps where they make the target population aware of different legal service programs and guide them to avail these facilities. In 1997, the Bar Council of India has made the study of legal aid an important and compulsory subject in the academic topics of the law schools in India. One of the avowed objectives of the Law School of University is to promote legal education. In pursuance of the same the Legal Services Clinic offers legal and paralegal services by the faculty and the students.

Department of Laws continuously organizes workshops, guest lectures and legal aid clinics in nearby adopted villages of our university.
